From WA Government Estimates Committee, 8 May 2024:
THE Estimates Committee Chaired by the Hon. Peter Collier MLC today held a hearing to better understand the workings of the sport of greyhound racing here in Western Australia.
The second Government Entity to appear was the controlling body Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA). It performs the role of ensuring the Legislated rules of wagering, integrity and welfare are carried out in each of the three codes of racing in the state. WA is the only jurisdiction in Australia in which the State owns the wagering entity while also having a racing code, greyhound racing, within its structure.
A total of 26 greyhounds have lost their lives on WA tracks since 1 July 2023 to 8 May 2024 compared to nine in the full period from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. Today at the hearing RWWA could give no explanation as to why there has been such a drastic increase.
